Wear a Dress Tuesday
Sometime during the fall of 2009, my friend Sarah and I were each having an equally awful week. When we realized it was only Monday, we thought we were doomed.
Then I had an idea.
I told Sarah that we were both going to wear dresses the next day. And I told her that it was going to make us feel better. And I told her that it was going to turn our weeks around.
And in a strange way – it did all of those things.
Here’s the thing: Dresses make a girl feel special. They have the ability to take an ordinary day and make it extraordinary. Life can get to be pretty mundane and it’s nice to have a reason to get dressed up. Life can get pretty stressful and it’s nice to have a reason to pamper yourself. You take more time to think about what you are wearing and are able to have some fun accessorizing. You can take one dress and change the way it looks by adding scarves, earrings and a pair of killer heels. People notice and tell you that you look nice! Who doesn’t like to be told that they look nice?
Here’s the other thing: It was something Sarah and I could do together – even though we lived 800 miles away from one another. We would text each other pictures and laugh hysterically when we ended up wearing the same dress. Living far away from some of your favorite girlfriends is hard – but this was something that could keep us connected.
We were amazed at the effectiveness of a simple outfit, so we decided to make it a tradition. Sarah and Sarah: Fighting the Tuesday ‘Blahs’ One Dress at a Time.
Slowly people started to take notice. They started to remember why we were wearing dresses and would even greet us by saying, “Happy Wear a Dress Tuesday!” We decided that because we had such a positive reaction to our little experiment that we wanted to invite others to join in and experience some of the same joy we were.
And that’s when our experiment became a movement.
The rules of Wear a Dress Tuesday are simple. You wake up on Tuesday, you wear a dress and you have a wonderful day. If you feel so inclined, take a picture, e-mail it to me (sarahelizabethweaver[at]gmail[dot]com) and I will post it on my blog. I love opening up my e-mail and seeing WADT pictures from all across the country – it makes the distance between me and my wonderful friends and family seem a little bit smaller.
My facebook status from one Wear a Dress Tuesday sums it up perfectly …
